You Just Died - My first game

Me and games

Since I’m little i loved to play video games. And.. wait.. you can MAKE games? :o Let’s go!

Force

2018 to 2019 I was making a minecraft roleplay project with some discord friends. It had a in my opinion great story and lore and then I thought, how cool would it be if I turned it into an Open World RPG Game?? And you can choose between 3 characters, and every character has it’s own story and powers, and there’s also an online battle mode with even more characters and Yeah I think you know this didn’t made the light of day.

Cat Island

I wanna make my own animal crossing game! But wait I can’t just rip off animal crossing… I know! I just only make cat villagers :D Wait how do you make a game tho

Project: Mercury

Hmm, Hytale got delayed again.. I know! I’ll make my own Hytale! Oh this is more difficult then I thought

Dreamlands

Really wanna make a game like animal crossing tho… But wait how do I make a game

SirCartaux

In February 2021 I met SirCartaux, not only the best cutter I know, also a great horror game dev! I played his games, and tested his new ones and thought, maybe if I start with something like this It’ll actually work out

Learning Adventure 1

Learning Adventure 1 is not only the cringiest name I ever came up with, but also what turned me into a game dev. I wrote down a table on everything I thought I would need to know to start making games, and how hard I thought it was. Down below you can find an image of it I like tables. These were the C# Challenges from Cartaux by the way:

  • I want a text to be output from the console with Debug.Log() after 5 seconds and then the camera is deleted again after 3 seconds
  • Make a script that every second creates a cube on (0, 0, 0) and the next second a cube on (0, 3, 0) the next a cube on (0, 6, 0) then (0, 9, 0) and so on. When the second cube is created, the first cube should be deleted and so should all the others. So there should be just one cube in the scene all the time. (The cube must not simply be moved every second, a new cube is to be created.)
  • Make three slabs on the floor. If you touch the first plate with the player, then a 3D text says “1”. If you touch the 2nd plate with the player, then it says “12” in a 3D text. If you touch the 3rd plate with the player, then it says “123” in a 3D text. So the number 1, 2 or 3 is always attached to the text of the 3D text, depending on the plate you are standing on. (For bonus points, add a sheep sound when you step on one of the buttons.) So I did all that and a really weird bizare one minute ““game”” came out of it. Can’t share it because I just used pictures from Google, but maybe I’ll change them and show you one day.

The Fourth Dimension

I watched a video by Jonas Tyroller where he showed a very cool effect where you could see an object from two sides at the same time. This got me the idea for a game where all the levels are the same place, but you start in 1D, then get to 2D, 3D and so on. Once you reach 10D you will meet an godly entity who you’ve been talking to the whole game, and when they want to tell you their name, the game crashes, because your human brain can’t process it. I scrapped it while making 2D.

Explore

Explore, now known as “You Just Died” was my first game that would actually see the light of day. I began working on it in February/March 2022 and had fun with it, but I kinda had a depressing phase in the first half of 2022, and then school came around and I needed to do lots of stuff there.

You Just Died

But in July summer vacation began and I could finally work on my game again! I began looking into the project, finishing the first level, making the second one, and then the third one. (Not as easy as it sounds here) Then I of course also made the Ending.

The Night of Release

Since beginning of July I had 27. July as a release date in mind, because that’s the birthday of ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ and if you played the game you know why that’s important ;) So I finished the Ending, fixed 2 small things and was like, okay, I’m satisfied, everything needed for release is done. It was around 1AM so I thought Ima have a quick look on the to do list what quick things I could still do. I did all of them. The Pause Menu, the “remembering your choice”, saving the level youre in, and some more little things like the VIP Room were only made in this on night. (Yeah I made an all nighter)

Release

I made it. It is done. I uploaded it. I actually released a game. While writing this (couple hours after release) the game already has 12 downloads which I think is pretty good considering I didn’t have any followers and this was my first time launching a game

Stay in touch for more games
